Importance of folic acid or folate during pregnancy

1.folic acid is a B-group vitamin found in a variety of foods.
2.a pregnant women should aim to consume at least 600 mcg of folate from their normal daily diet
3.it is recommended that women planning a pregnancy take an additional
400 mcg of folic acid each day for a month before and three months after conception
4.this may be taken as a supplement or in the form of fortified foods (food to which folate has been added during production)
5.folate taken over this period can prevent up to seven out of 10 cases of neural tube
defects in the developing fetus
